Katherine M. Zhou

Oxford Internet Institute

Designer & PhD Candidate

Kat Zhou is a PhD candidate and proud trade union member at the University of Oxford researching the sociology of work and the geographies of artificial intelligence. Before her PhD, Zhou worked as a designer in the tech industry across the United States and Sweden. She also created Design Ethically, a project that began as a framework for bringing ethics into design practice and evolved into a critical toolkit that helps teams anticipate the real-world consequences of their products. Through this work, Zhou has spoken widely about the harms of deceptive and manipulative design, with invitations from the Nobel Prize Summit, the European Parliament, the US Federal Trade Commission, and leading tech conferences. Her insights have been featured by the BBC, Wired, Fast Company, Protocol, and Tech Policy Press.
